Dr. Justin Caithaml recently graduated from the University of Maryland with a Ph.D. in music education where he served as instructor for student teaching seminars and teaching assistant for undergraduate choral and general music education courses. He served as choir director at Midview Local Schools in Ohio for six years and is a Past President of the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education. Justin has also completed degrees at Teachers College, Columbia University (NYC) and Baldwin Wallace University. A passionate advocate for equity and access in music education, their current research focuses on more deeply understanding gender and sexuality discourse in the music education profession. His research was recently awarded the Outstanding Graduate Paper Award in Music Education at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association, the world’s largest educational research conference. Ensembles under his direction have collaborated with choirs from Westminster Choir College and have performed at the Governor’s Awards for the Arts in Ohio and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. His work has been accepted for presentation at a variety of conferences, including the Symposium on Music Teacher Education and The 5th Symposium for LGBTQ Studies and Music Education, as well as state music education conferences in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
