Gail Clayton

Dr. Gail Clayton, DCN, CNS, MS, RPh, LDN, is Adjunct Faculty in Clinical Nutrition at the University of Bridgeport, where she teaches graduate-level Functional Biochemistry of Nutrition. A clinical nutritionist and pharmacist with more than 25 years of pharmacy experience, Dr. Clayton specializes in translating complex nutritional biochemistry into practical clinical frameworks for practitioners. Her areas of expertise include metabolomics, organic acids test (OAT) interpretation, amino acid metabolism, mitochondrial function, nutrient cofactors, methylation, detoxification pathways, and the biochemical foundations of complex chronic illness.

Her work in organic acids and metabolomics was significantly shaped through direct mentorship and collaboration with Dr. Richard Lord, a pioneer in clinical organic acid analysis. Dr. Clayton served as Dr. Lord’s assistant and met with him weekly to review the development of his later work, contributing suggested edits and helping clarify key concepts in material they also taught together. This experience deepened her approach to interpreting organic acid patterns through underlying biochemistry rather than relying solely on marker-by-marker pattern recognition.

Dr. Clayton has developed advanced professional education in organic acids and amino acids interpretation for clinicians and is the author of books and case-based educational resources on organic acids testing. Her teaching emphasizes the biochemical pathways underlying laboratory findings and helps practitioners connect metabolic data with physiology, nutritional status, and clinical presentation.
